Family of One

There was a time, in my former narrowness of perspective, that I was practicing exclusion without being consciously aware of it. Through the love of my own family, I was decreeing that so-called “others” were excluded. Thus, “they” were not entitled to the benefits associated with inclusion. Such a perspective is deeply rooted in a personal sense of “i” who prefers to keep some persons close, and others distant. It’s the prevalent way of defining family in the majority of our current societies. It’s what leads to feuds between families on a small scale, and wars between nations on a larger scale. We’re so accustomed to it, that we accept it as normal.

It’s not surprising that this is a prevalent perspective, because it’s fostered by our media, governments, and the majority of families. It’s dispensed on a world-wide basis via a vending-machine mentality gone mad. Through our thoughts, words, and actions, we segregate and separate one another as though sorting conveyer-belt fruit into appropriate containers. You, the “Rockefellers,” belong here; while you, the “Smiths,” belong there. “Friends of the family?” we inquire, standing guard, as the poor and needy approach and smile with their hopeful faces.

In a fell swoop of conditioning, we belittle or dignify; accept or reject. Our processing ability to divide and classify is outdone only by our capacity to judge. We defend “our” positions by hurling rotten tomatoes and/or deadly torpedoes. “Out, out, damn spots” our minds cry, “you do NOT belong!” Gender and race, creed and nationality, colour and orientations–these are the tools of our biases; and apply them skillfully and willfully we do!

What if, however, humanity could awaken from its delusional belief in separation? On one shiny, perfect day, what if everyone entered the stillness and heard the following silent words from our Creator’s heart: “Everyone is of me, the only Creator. You are One.” Would we not then turn away from judging and embrace one another as family? Would we not then see with our hearts, instead of our eyes? Could we then look beyond appearances and comprehend our divine origin? We might even focus on building bridges of love, instead of fences of hatred.

Dare to dream (and care for one another).

Our Ruts of Fear

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of the word rut, as it relates to how I am applying it within this article, is as follows: “a track worn by a wheel or by habitual passage.” With regard to the human condition, persons often have certain ruts of fear that threaten, or outright sabotage, our quality of life. For example, some individuals may be fearful of spiders, crowds, or dogs, which, thereby, limit their exploration of environments in which any of those three might be present. For other persons, the ruts of fear may be related to larger subjects, such as love, success, or fame. In any of these cases, either specific or general, our mental ruts are formed by repeatedly travelling the pathways of our fears.

At subconscious levels of our Being, our personal ruts of fear–which pretend to keep us safe–apply their subtle and subversive techniques and manipulation. At the brink of escape, as we reach for that which we most yearn, so-called logic or common sense, often claws us back or blocks our pathway to success. It is then that the voice of the rut, most often disguised as a friend, whispers its haunting message: “Come back; come back to the safety of the known.” If given attention, our ruts of fear actually choke our lives of the very reason we breathe in the first place:

If not for the more joyful expression of the gifts within us,

why do we live?

Dear Readers: Please hear this message and let it resonate deeply within your heart. In all of our issues of life, greater awareness is the magic key to greater accomplishment and joy. Let not your ruts of fear keep you apparently safe, while the clock of your lifetime ticks the minutes away. It is only by examining our fears by the Light of Consciousness that they diminish.

Dare to dream (and care for one another).

With heartfelt regards,

Washed By The Lord

In John 13: 1-7, it’s stated that Jesus washed his disciples’ feet the night before he was to be crucified. Why would He perform such an act? From my understanding, the reason was to signify that they, too, were temples of the living God; whether they realized it or not. His message to them—and to us, still—is that we must be cleansed of our erroneous belief that we’re the false self (ego) and realize that we are God incarnate, the Christ. By washing their feet (which would have been considered a humbling act), Jesus symbolically demonstrated that they were of equal greatness as He. The following two passages offer more information about our essential nature:

“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”

John 14:12

***

“I and the Father are one.”

John 10:30

The confusion regarding our true origin is certainly understandable. For That which is One to take an apparently human journey (and experience the world which It, Itself, is creating on moment to moment basis), It must willingly veil Its true nature from Itself. There’s no other way that such may occur. The apparent strife that we witness is created by, and due to, confusion regarding our true identity. Because of this, humanity suffers the painful consequences of one another’s innocent ignorance. Another valuable passage is found in John 8: 32:

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

The Truth that will set us free is a higher state of Consciousness. In other words, we must knowingly rise. When we recognize our essential nature, we are liberated from the delusional belief of being the person. This is not a conceptual occurrence, as many assume. It occurs when we realize—via direct experience—our true Self. Through meditation, we discover that we aren’t who we think we are.

How does being washed by the Lord improve living conditions on Earth? Let’s logically contemplate the question and see if we may discover a sensible answer. The majority of us have most likely witnessed, or directly experienced, the strife that can arise when persons disagree. When this happens in our personal relationships, we experience conflict or abuse in varying degrees. When it occurs amongst nations, we are subjected to wars that promise peace via violence against one another. How in heaven’s name can such an approach ever bring peace?

A solution of deeper understanding is available. If we are washed with the Spirit of the Lord and, thereby, recognize one another’s shared Unity, what conflict could arise? Who, in seeing their Self in an apparent “other” could ever lift a hand in aggression? Who, in knowing the Truth of our shared Being, could live in a manner contrary to peace, harmony, and love? The sooner that we are all washed by the Lord the better our apparent world will be.

Dare to dream (and care for one another).

With heartfelt regards,

Time To Be Still

In the folly of my teenage years, I had a default coping strategy which, although not actually acted upon, most likely set the stage for some problematic years and experiences. Whenever a troubling circumstance or situation felt beyond my skill set, I would visualize running as fast as I could and jumping a freight train. Where was the train headed? In my adolescent mind, the answer was always: “Wherever I could escape having to experience the damned feelings running through me.” The great flaw in this strategy, of course, is that wherever you go, there you are. To run, run, run, run-runaway makes no sense at all. Neither, truly, does anger, when it is a means of coping with fear.

Although I stopped visualizing jumping a freight train to escape uncomfortable or fearful situations many years ago, my childish strategy for dealing with the stresses of life may have covertly morphed into other mechanisms (such as distraction, or a bull-dog “let’s-make-this-right” attitude) that are also ineffective at dealing with the root of the issues. In the first, we’re basically ignoring the hurt through redirection of our attention; in the second, we’re putting our shoulder against the world and expecting it to move. The main point is that unfelt issues related to the human experience–such as loss, embarrassment, guilt, shame, regret, grief, loneliness, ridicule, resentment, and fear–are potentially going to turn around and bite us where it hurts unless we acknowledge them at the time…and feel them. The following are examples of situations that might give rise to uncomfortable feelings:

  • What does it feel like to lose a loved one?
  • What does it feel like to experience sudden divorce?
  • What does it feel like to be given a life-changing diagnosis?
  • What does it feel like to be faced with homelessness?
  • What does it feel like to be forced to change careers midlife?
  • What does it feel like to be estranged from family members?
  • What does it feel like to have high expenses and low income?

This strategy related to feeling is not intended to bog us down in self pity or remorse. Its effect is actually the opposite–to liberate us. By feeling what needs to be felt, we gain greater clarity of perspective and allow ourselves to positively move forward. I believe that the following quote from Joseph Campbell expresses the best potential result:

The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”

By simply being with our fears (and, as a dear friend suggested, even welcoming them), we disarm so many of their negative effects. When we take time to be (with the good, the bad, and the ugly), we allow their energies to be felt and accepted. Our intention is not to judge anything; for this is the grand territory of Isness, not the petty place of rightness or wrongness. From the vantage point of Being, we realize that nothing can truly harm us. We are not our stories of triumph or tragedy; nor are we the character playing the starring role in our life movie. Fear, when faced, loses so much of its imagined power.

In my life story, I have come a long apparent way. No longer am I seeking to run away from my fears on a freight train headed for who knows where. Now, I’m willing to sit with what frightens me–including sides of my personality that are less than perfect, and circumstances that feel uncomfortable. This, I believe, is opening me to all of the incredible goodness that this life has to offer. May such also happen for you.

Dare to dream (and care for one another).

With heartfelt regards,

Love So Deep

The Bible might be unfamiliar territory to a lot of readers (myself included), but the majority of persons may know of the following well-known passage. Found in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7, the passage describes the nature and qualities of God/Love:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

By comparison, the egoic love of humankind can seem barren, or lacking, in any real substance. It’s a poor imitation, which is often unstable and dependent on circumstances and/or behaviour. This type of love might be termed the “thought” of love, because it’s based on the sliding scale of polarity. Such explains why many persons experience a version of love that feels hot one day, yet frigid the next.

To know and express God’s love, we must become It. No shortcuts exist; there’s no other way. We know that we’re dealing with real–So Deep–love by the depth of our emotional capacity. To pour forth as that which is pure, we must first be emptied of that which is impure. For instance: If the love that we profess is dependent or tainted by self interest, it’s not pure. If there are motives that are suspect, self-serving, or selfish attached to the love we express, such a love is also impure. If there’s the faintest hint of getting, instead of the purity of giving, we are dealing with imitative love. Logically, this makes sense. As God is already everything, what could It possibly hope to gain? If, on the other hand, our love is abundant, non judgmental, and overflowing with sincerity, we have tapped the Golden Fountain of Love. At this point, we aren’t loving “like” God, but “as” God.

Awareness is the key to helping us to express, as much as humanly possible, the shining fullness of our Creator’s Divine Love. Left to his own resources, the guy named “Art” is incapable of expressing Love So Deep; but when he is surrendered, God is enabled to flow in and express a love that’s deep, rich, and real.

Dare to dream (and care for one another).

With heartfelt regards,

Evil Overheard

One day, Michael Angelo (no relation) felt the call of nature and entered the men’s bathroom at his local shopping mall. The bathroom appeared empty as he quietly stepped into a stall. He was lowering his trousers, when he realized that someone, indeed, was occupying the second stall to his left. As Michael sat upon his throne, pondering the big questions of life (What am I doing this Friday night? I wonder who will win the playoffs? Did humankind really land on the moon?), he heard a gruff voice from the stall begin to speak, as though dictating a memo to a secretary:

***

This message has got to get out to our agents as soon as possible,” began the voice in a hushed tone. “The public are beginning to awaken to their essential nature and attempting to gain the upper hand. That’s not going to happen–not under my reign. We’ve got to use all of our resources. Humans are highly susceptible to fear, and ignorant of their own latent abilities; we’re going to use that to our advantage. Release as many fearful stories as possible, regarding every type of event far and wide. Ensure that the incidents appear real, and back them up with video clips of officials reporting on scene. Flood the public with images and stories of hatred, racism, and violence–via print media, television, radio, and mobile devices–with a subtlety that won’t be noticed. Use subliminal messages when you’re certain that they won’t be detected. If anyone hassles you, get back to me and I’ll take care of the matter. Bribe anyone willing to take the money; and if that doesn’t work, use blackmail. Beyond that, hire violence; but ensure that any deaths appear accidental. It’s important that any hint of resistance is squashed immediately.”

***

And just as quickly as the voice had begun speaking, it abruptly stopped. As Michael listened quietly, with the back of his neck becoming clammy, he suddenly smelled a foul odour emanating from the stall to his left. The stench seemed the perfect punctuation to the end of the evil message. When he heard the stall door rasp open, he silently lifted his feet off the floor so that his presence wouldn’t be noticed.

Michael assumed that the character must have been the devil–what else could be that menacing and evil? Unbeknownst to him, the unidentified figure appeared much like you or me. Just for the record, he didn’t wash his hands.

Dare to dream (and care for one another).

Being Joy

The inversion of Truth (that things and achievement are the source of our joy) has become so prevalent in society that the majority of persons are unaware that it is an utter falsity. For reasons that are highly suspect, the story related to happiness/joy has become very corrupt. On a daily basis, we are informed that this, that, or another thing will guarantee our happiness. The problem is that the heavily-advertised equation is rarely, if ever, subjected to mathematical investigation for validity. Does 2 (money) + 2 (possessions/achievements) actually = 4 (lasting happiness)? If not, working persons are unknowingly subject to a system that cannot possibly yield the freedom and joy which they seek. Many will fall into an early grave, minus a nose lost to a heartless grindstone.

By the statements above, it might be easy for readers to assume that I’m against the finer objects and experiences of life. Such is definitely not the case; although I will admit that they have never held great importance or appeal. We are informed in books about the law of attraction that abundance–in all its various forms–actually allows us to live more fully; and with this, I most certainly agree. Through abundance, we may not only help ourselves but also extend our reach and capacity to help others. Therefore, we are wise to welcome abundance–in health, wealth, and relationships; for these represent our true wealth, which is awareness of God within.

The most effective method of deliberate manifestation functions directly opposite to what we’ve been told. When we express ourselves joyously, and ensure that our talents are applied to lift humanity, our success is literally guaranteed. It is then, through the sharing of our innate joy, that the symbolic rewards of that joy expressed will manifest in our lives. Galatians 6:7 states this clearly:  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” God, (aka Consciousness) cannot be mocked; for It is the Source of all intelligence and realizes the degree of sincerity within our intentions. When we give, we must give with our heart–purely! We must give as though we are the receiver of the gifts, because in Truth we actually are.

For many readers, a perfectly logical question may arise: “How am I supposed to give generously and express myself joyfully when I am impoverished of both?” In response, I offer the following: Can we now, if even modestly, offer sincere and humble gratitude for the goodness before us? Through the gift of my eyes, I am enabled to see the words upon this page. Through the gift of my fingers, I can type upon the keyboard. When we stop, even momentarily, and live with increased awareness, we will realize that there is always something for which we may give thanks. Likewise, through greater awareness, we realize that we can give a smile, hold open a door, or lend a hand–all of which cost nothing. These are not meaningless actions; they possess power to activate spiritual law that benefits everyone.

Just for the record (I’m sure the majority of readers realize this already), but the absolute best way of increasing our joy is by sharing it with others. Give, give, give! Give your friendly assistance; give your time and/or resources; give your smile. The good that we share immediately reveals its benefit within us. Be a joy unto others–through your service and daily interactions–and watch how the circumstances of your life change for the better.

Dare to dream (and care for one another).

With heartfelt regards,

Art

Standing “As”

This world can seem a battlefield of challenges and strife. On a daily basis, we directly view or hear reports of varying degrees of conflict. Everyone has preferences: we desire this, but not that. As the number of so-called “others” increases, the issue becomes more complex. Our differing opinions regarding right and wrong leave us with little or no middle ground labelled “Peace.” During such times, it can be challenging to resist the temptation of being “against” a circumstance, rather than having the wisdom of being “for” what feels right in our heart. This metaphysical principle of behaviour (which I refer to as Standing “As”) is vitally important to understand: That to which we give our attention persists more strongly. To improve conditions, we must resolutely place our attention on that which we desire, not its apparent opposite. Let’s imagine, if we can, a peaceful world in which we live by the following:

  • Can we stand “as” tolerance, without being against intolerance?
  • Can we stand “as” honesty, without being against dishonesty?
  • Can we stand “as” selflessness, without being against selfishness?
  • Can we stand “as” equality, without being against inequality?
  • Can we stand “as” honour, without being against corruption?
  • Can we stand “as” love, without giving your energy to hate?
  • Can we stand “as” peace, without being against war?
  • In short, can we stand for the result we desire, rather than expending our energy by being against its opposite?”

Through the development of our character, we may exemplify the beliefs that we hold most dear, without becoming self-important or proud. This is clearly illustrated in a famous poem entitled Sermons We See, by Edgar Guest. Here I offer the first stanza:

I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day;
I’d rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
The eye’s a better pupil and more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing, but example’s always clear;
And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action is what everybody needs
.

Mahatma Ghandi also expressed this vitally important principle in his famous and succint expression:

Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Perhaps we could develop the habit of asking ourselves, “What attitude am I broadcasting to the world today?” It’s up to us to ensure it’s a good one, born of our highest ideals.

Dare to dream (and care for one another).

With heartfelt regards,

Curses Begone!

Boj (no relationship to Job, I assure you) had it rough. Just ask him, and he would eagerly relate the woes of his life. He was cursed, he was certain. Habitually he thought about, and spoke about, all that was wrong. To him, every day seemed a chore, a battle to be endured from dawn to dusk. He didn’t just believe in Murphy’s Law; he’d been the inspiration for its first draft. Boj was infamous for his uncontrollable tirades. It never dawned on Boj that if he changed positively within that the so-called world without could improve, as a reflection of that change.

When circumstances went wrong, as they often did for Boj, his usual way of reacting was a version of the following performance: With his face reddening with building pressure, Boj would bend down into a deep squat (as though gathering energy from Mother Earth), and then spring upward onto his tippy-toes. At the apex of the spike, with his head convulsing from side to side like a ravenous lion, he would roar:

Dam# iT# al&L tH#E waY to $he%Ll and #ba$%%^k! Swee#T Ffly#%ing #fU@g%-a- doodle!

This lifE i$ one #h3!! of a RuFf bu##ggnng ride!

It was on one of these not-so-sweet occasions, that his neighbour, better known as Granny Goodadvice, approached him and softly said, “Having a rough one, Boj?”

“What was your first clue?” asked Boj, with a scowl.

“Oh, I don’t know,” said Granny, with a subtle grin. “A little birdie tol’ me so.”

“So, what of it?” asked Boj.

“Well, I just wanted to share some advice, in case it could be some service to you.” Granny, who was ninety-nine according to neighbours, waggled her index finger at BoJ, with a come-here-sonny look.”

When Boj had moved closer, she leaned close and whispered: “At one time, I was also no stranger to cursing. I knew all of the curse bombs, and I dropped them haphazardly everywhere I went. I could unload great big A-bombs, and strafe the atmosphere with rat-a-tat tat machine-gun ones. But one day, a dear brave soul approached me and tol’ me that my life would improve if I started expressing sincere gratitude…from my heart.”

“That’s it!?” exclaimed Boj. “That’s your great pearl of wisdom?!”

“Uh, huh,” said Granny, with a nod. “Yup, that’s it.”

“And just what,” said Boj, with a scowl, “do you think that I have to be grateful for?”

Granny squinted like the Clint Eastwood fan she was and said, “Your life, sonny. Your very life.” And with that, she turned and ambled back to her home. It was time to watch her afternoon soap opera.

Baker’s Dozen: Power Quotes

There are many people who believe that they understand the law of attraction; but quite often that isn’t the case. To get the most from the following baker’s dozen of power quotes, a paradigm shift (from a matter-based world to a consciousness-only reality) is required. As you read the quotes, please imagine your body-mind to be as light as your character would feel to you in a nighttime dream. So-called daily “reality” is actually occurring within the waking state. This understanding (as challenging as that might be to your logical mind) is the key to help you manifest more of what you desire. What follows are thirteen of many law of attraction quotes that I have accumulated during years of study. May they help to awaken a deeper understanding within you:

There is but one consciousness in the universe able to think; and when it thinks, its thoughts become objective things to it.”

(The Master Key System, by Charles F. Haanel)

***

No living soul can demonstrate two things at the same time, if one contradicts the other. There is no way except to let go of all that you do not wish to come into your experience, and, in mind, take all that you do wish.”

(Creative Mind, by Ernest Holmes)

***

Wealth consciousness is simply the expansion of your consciousness and awareness into the wealthy parts of your Self.”

(A Happy Pocket Full of Money, by David Cameron Gikandi)

***

More gold has been mined from the minds of men, than the earth itself.”

(Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill)

***

There are only two things you can do for yourself. One is conception, and the other is conviction. All the work of creation rests with another than you. For no man is responsible for anything in his life except this thought and belief.”

(Three Magic Words,” by U. S. Andersen)

***

When you change the story you tell, the world changes too.”

(Magic Words, by Genevieve Davis)

***

Thought is the only power which can produce tangible riches from the formless substance. The stuff from which all things are made is a substance which thinks. A thought of form in the substance produces the form.”

(The Science of Getting Rich, by Wallace D. Wattles)

***

All is mind and we are mental, we are in mind and can only get from it what we first think into it. We must not only think but we must know. We have to provide within ourselves a mental and spiritual likeness for the thing desired.”

(Creative Mind, by Ernest Holmes)

***

The law is always the same, that our Thought forms a spiritual prototype which, if left undisturbed, will reproduce itself in external circumstances.”

(The Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science, by Thomas Troward)

***

Thought creates the world. Thought brings things into existence.”

(Thought Power, by Sri Swami Sivananda)

***

The Power in you is the Creator of the world.”

(Illusion vs Reality, by Shri Ranjit Maharaj)

***

The mind is a magnet and attracts whatever corresponds to its ruling state. Whatever image is in mind, whatever we expect and think about, will tend to bring into our lives the things and conditions that in harmony therewith.”

(Working With The Law, by Raymond Holliwell)

***

Things have no reality other than in consciousness. Therefore, get the consciousness first and the thing is compelled to appear.”

(Neville Goddard’s Interpretation of Scripture, by Neville Goddard)

***

Because it’s in my nature to give, and we are always told to “go that extra mile in everything we do,” I’m going to close this article with another quote, to make it fourteen in total:

As the Divine Thought Energy flows through your consciousness and out into the phenomenal world to appear as prosperous experiences and conditions, its ‘plastic’ quality allows it to be impressed by the tone and shape of your dominant belief. Therefore, what you see, hear, taste, and smell are your beliefs objectified.”

(The Abundance Book, by John Randolph Price)
